My new Bat
Got my new bat, Gunn and Moore Maxi Original L.E., with a white/gold Puma Ballistic grip. Improves the weight of the bat as I had 2 Matrix grips before. Nets are going well, can't wait for the new season!

Beard of the Year - Monty Panesar
Amid the doom and gloom in Melbourne, a glimmer of good news for England spinner Monty Panesar, who has just been named the 2006 Beard of the Year. Monty's facial hair has enjoyed meteoric success in the past nine months and its hard work has been acknowledged by the Beard Liberation Front, an informal network of beard wearers. This is no mean feat, considering he was pushed all the way by one of the greatest revolutionary beards of them all, Cuba's ailing leader Fidel Castro. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and veteran trade union leader Paul Mackney tied for third place. Andrew Flintoff's (now distant) heroics in the 2005 Ashes series sporting a healthy gingery-blond designer stubble won him the title last year. Panesar, a devout Sikh, will no doubt be thrilled to learn of his latest accolade after missing out on the 2006 Sports Personality of the Year award. "Of course he (Monty) has his beard for rather different reasons than say a footballer or actor with a designer beard, but whatever the reason people have beards, we focus on the magnificence of the hirsuteness," said BLF Organiser Keith Flett. At least this is one title the Aussies can't take away...

Play when you're winning...
When your team's 2-0 down and seemingly on the verge of losing the Ashes, it takes some confidence to blow your own trumpet. But England fan group the Barmy Army have been able to do that here in Perth - finally. Bill Cooper, the group's trumpeter, was thrown out at the Gabba and also silenced at the Adelaide Oval. The Barmy Army threatened to boycott the rest of the series in protest but that was averted when authorities at the Waca allowed Cooper to sit in the Podium East Stand, which was almost entirely populated by England supporters on day one. "They've been great to me here," Cooper, 27, told me. "They've been very friendly and said they had no problem with me playing the trumpet, which is the way it should be." With England ending the first session on top, the mood among the visiting fans was upbeat but Cooper insisted his quiet start was not because Australia began confidently. "I took my time to get going because you don't want to play all day - you have to pace yourself. "I've got a fair few tunes - I don't keep count - but you have to keep it varied to make sure the boys and girls are well entertained." With that Cooper grabbed hold of his instrument and blared out a number created for Monty Panesar. And as I was leaving, the left-arm spinner/cult hero struck to delight the huge English presence among the crowd. Music to the ears.
