Our First Game |
| |
Well, not the best start with the bat, after a very heavy rain and playing on a soaking artificial wicket I managed to get out for a golden duck, played all round a good straight delivery.
Made up for it with the ball though, had the batsman jumping and prodding at some nice quick uns before cartwheeling his leg stump out the ground with an inswinging yorker.
Roll on next week and another chance with the bat. |

Compression Tops |
| |
We've all seen Michael Vaughan wearing one, most of the Aussies wear them and Brett Lee swears by his, so are they worth it??
I recently tried using a compression top for the first time. I popped to my local Sports World store and picked up a Nike short sleeve compression top.
I'm used to doing a fair bit of training, and I bowl medium fast, so I wanted to know if it would have any noticable impact on me, a non pro like most of us.
I put the top on and the first effect is that it makes your chest and upper body feel a bit restricted. It almost felt like tight cling film wrapped around your torso. At first this meant that my bowling action felt a bit funny, but you soon get used to it.
The second major selling point with these tops is that they 'wick sweat away' from the body. Well it did that too, but you should expect to feel a bit hotter than normal at first.
After bowling in nets and doing some fielding practice for about an hour I forgot I was wearing the top and it deffinatley seemed to be helping support my back and shoulders.
After training I took the top off and noted how it does keep your skin cooler by whizzing the sweat off it and onto the top of the material.
A Compression top is not an essential bit of kit for a part timer who plays once or twice a week, but I would recommend one if you fancy not having quiet so many aches and pains the next day!
Over all I would recommend getting a cheaper one to start with. Like I said at Sports World I picked up a white one for £11. I would not fork out £30 + on something that you might not like. Happy Batting |

Quickest Way to put on bat grips EVER |
| |
YOU DON'T NEED A GRIP CONE!!!
YOU DON'T NEED HE-MAN FINGERS!!!
ALL YOU NEED IS A PLASTIC BAG!!!!
Saw this method on website and have tried it numerous times since. I showed my team mates the method and without ever trying it before they could all re grip their bats in about 30 seconds!!
Step 1.
Take a plastic shopping bag (any type will do Asds, Saino's etc).
2. put the handles together at one end and pull the bag through your fist so that it goes thin.
3. poke the bag, bottom first through your grip.
4 using both hands position the handles and mouth of the grip at the end of your bat handle.
5. Slide the bag and grip over the top of your handle. This is the only slightly tricky bit and it might need the minimum of coaxing to get it on.
6. Simply pull on the handles and slide the grip all the way down the bat handle.
7. Once its in position roll down the top of the grip and tear out the plastic bag you can see.
8. Roll back and then roll up the bottom of the grip and pull out the rest of the bag.
9. Hey Presto, now look smug at your mates as they strain and grimace trying to roll and un roll tight grips over silly cones and on to bats. |

And Into the light |
| |
Well, the progression towards the beginning of the season is going well. My bowling is getting better and more accurate, and my batting has come on leaps and bounds. With each session in the nets we pick up more bruises, squashed toes and sore shoulders from hurling the ball down towards our team mates. The pint in the pub on a sunday evening after our sessions solidifies the team spirit and makes us all a bit excited at our first league game just a month and a half away. Roll on Summer!! |

Out of the Darkness |
| |
It's been fifteen years...
...Fifteen years since I last bowled a ball in anger. Since I last swung a bat in defence or attack..
...It feels as though I've been reborn into cricket. I'm a different shape, taller, stronger, more focused. I'm older too, wiser, more experienced, it's going to be interesting to see how this season pans out.
Looking forward to keeping you all up to date with my return to the fold.
