Jordan Ranson and Wesley Jarman forged their friendship on the sports field at high school.
Ten years later, they swapped cricket bats for film cameras and embarked on a new dream – travelling the world and documenting their adventures.
The self-taught duo have been in the game only 10 months, but they’re already making waves.
Having built up an impressive Instagram following from a trip to Europe last year, they decided to go “all in” and have quit their jobs ahead of a second trip which begins at the end of this month.
Ranson is a social media contractor and Jarman is a sparky. Together, they’re the Motion Bros.
Through drone and camera shots, carefully edited into bite-sized morsels for social media consumption, they hope to inspire people to take a risk and try new things.
“We didn’t have background or training in any of the stuff we do,” Ranson said, “we taught ourselves to do everything.”
The 24-year-old North Shore resident believed there was a growing demand for creative user-generated content and didn’t think a lack of experience should deter people from giving things a go.
“We love showing people that ‘we’re just like you … We taught ourselves how to do all this stuff, you can do that as well.'”
Ranson also wanted to see people exercise their artistic side and challenge the status quo, in terms of what constitutes a “normal” job.
“When you’re stuck in the rat race doing your 9 to 5, you lose passion for what you enjoy doing,” Ranson said.
“[But] when you’re on the road meeting all these new people, everyone’s in such a great head space and the best version of themselves. They seem kind of free.”
Ranson also had a piece of advice for others wanting to hit the road in a similar fashion – choose who to travel with wisely.
“You’re living in this person’s pocket for as long as you’re travelling, so you need to make sure the friendship is strong before you choose a travel partner,” Ranson said.
“There are going to be tiffs but, as long as you’re open and honest and respect each other’s boundaries, I think you’re going to be fine.
Ranson and Jarman’s next adventure begins in London on May 29 and ends in Croatia on September 3.
The duo were selected for a Busabout all-expenses-paid trip along with two other contestants from the US and Australia.
Their video was enough to get them on the trip ahead of 2000 other contestants.
